Have you seen this McDonald’s training video from 1972? It’s one of my most favorite things I’ve ever found on the internet!

There’s something unnerving about that character on the left. Maybe it’s just ‘coz I saw The Babadook last night (which was well done, btw imo).
Anyways, the prices on the board piqued my curiosity, so I did some research and found out that the average U.S. hourly wage was $4.08 in April of ’73. A $.65 Big Mac wasn’t too bad then, being roughly 16% an hour’s pay. It’s still relatively cheaper to today’s $4.80 cost of a Big Mac, which is almost a quarter of the average hourly wage today ($20.86).

Good heavens, I can’t believe it. I seriously had no idea. It’s weird, while I was doing those calculations, I envisioned the impact on a typical McD’s customer and their value judgment while standing in line.
I did a similar study when calculating the relative prices of those cool old ’50s and ’60s toys and found out that they were pretty darn expensive, when accounting for the average American wage(s) at the time.
